Sherman Oaks is in the City of Los Angeles, along Ventura Boulevard east of Encino and south of Van Nuys. A Sherman Oaks employment lawyer uses the Los Angeles minimum wage for work performed here: $18.42 an hour as of July 1, 2026, plus the California overtime and break rules.
Paying the state minimum of $16.90 is not compliance if the employee worked in Sherman Oaks. The city’s Office of Wage Standards can pursue the difference, and an employee can also seek it in a wage claim or a lawsuit, along with penalties.
Retail, restaurants, and small offices
Sherman Oaks work is concentrated in the Galleria, Ventura Boulevard retail and restaurants, and small professional offices. Typical claims:
- Opening and closing duties off the clock. If you had to be there before the official start or stay after you clocked out, that time is paid.
- Split shifts and reporting-time pay. A restaurant or retail schedule that sends you home early, or that splits your day, can trigger reporting-time pay under the wage order.
- Tip pools that include managers or owners. California limits who may share in a tip pool. Tips are not a substitute for the Los Angeles minimum wage.
- Harassment in small offices where the person you would report to is the harasser. FEHA still applies, and a complaint to the Civil Rights Department does not require your employer’s permission.
How Sherman Oaks differs from Glendale
Sherman Oaks and Glendale share a freeway and a retail economy. They do not share a minimum wage. Glendale generally follows the state rate, with a separate hotel rate. Sherman Oaks follows Los Angeles. If you transferred between a Sherman Oaks store and a Glendale store, the rate can change with the location. Keep the store address on your schedule or pay stub.
The Labor Commissioner office for these claims is in Van Nuys at 6150 Van Nuys Blvd., Room 206. That is a filing office, not a requirement that you hire a lawyer whose only office is on that block. Jonny Law represents Sherman Oaks employees in wage, leave, harassment, and wrongful-termination cases.
