Jonny Law represents employees who work in Van Nuys and the rest of the San Fernando Valley. If you searched for a Van Nuys employment lawyer, this page is the hub for unpaid wages, missed breaks, wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation claims that arise here.
Van Nuys is a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles. Two sets of rules usually apply at once: the California Labor Code, and the City of Los Angeles wage ordinances. As of July 1, 2026, the Los Angeles minimum wage for employees who work in the city is $18.42 an hour, above the statewide rate. The city’s Office of Wage Standards publishes the rate each year.
Where Van Nuys wage claims are filed
The California Labor Commissioner’s Office (DLSE) has a district office in Van Nuys at 6150 Van Nuys Blvd., Room 206, Van Nuys, CA 91401. Valley employees often file wage claims there. The same building handles entertainment work permits. Office details are on the DLSE district office list.
A wage claim is one path. A lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court is another, and it is often the better path when the case also includes wrongful termination, harassment, or penalties that the Labor Commissioner does not fully hear. The Van Nuys courthouse hears many of these civil cases. Deadlines differ by claim, so do not wait for a conference date to ask whether a lawsuit is required.
Claims we see from Van Nuys workplaces
- Unpaid wages and overtime. California overtime is generally time-and-a-half after 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week, and double time after 12 hours in a day. A higher Los Angeles minimum wage does not replace those overtime rules.
- Missed meal and rest breaks. One unpaid meal period is due before the end of the fifth hour, and a paid 10-minute rest break is due for each four hours worked. A missed break is generally one extra hour of pay per day for meals and one for rest breaks.
- Wrongful termination and retaliation after a wage complaint, a harassment report, or a request for disability or pregnancy leave.
- Harassment and discrimination based on sex, race, national origin, age, disability, religion, or other characteristics protected by FEHA.

Van Nuys is the starting point, not the only one
People who work in Burbank, Glendale, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and Woodland Hills often live in Van Nuys, and the reverse is just as common. The Labor Commissioner office on Van Nuys Boulevard serves a wide Valley area, but the wage rate depends on the city where the hours were worked. A shift in Burbank is not automatically covered by the Los Angeles minimum wage. A shift in Encino is, because Encino is in the City of Los Angeles.
